How to put iPhone in DFU mode

DFU is the abbreviation of Device Firmware Upgrade mode which allows the restoration of a device from the current state. In this mode, the boot-ROM may accept iBSS. Moreover, DFU is burnt into the hardware as a part of secure-ROM, so removing it is not possible. Although DFU mode resembles the most obvious recovery mode they aren’t the same, because in recovery mode the device is reverted to factory settings with the latest iOS available whereas, in DFU mode, iTunes can still communicate with the device but cannot upgrade its software to the latest version automatically.

Now, here’s how you can put your device in DFU mode-

Preliminary knowledge

  • Below the display of your iPhone, the circular button is the Home Button.
  • The power button is known as the Sleep / Wake Button.
  • Firmware is the bridge between hardware and software which means that it controls the functionality of a given device.
  • During a DFU restore, your pc or mac completely erases all the coding present on the device that controls it and if even a small issue arises, then it can potentially harm the device.
  • Water damaged iPhone shouldn’t be used for this, as it sometimes wrecks it functionality completely if the restore doesn’t complete.
  • Your device can be on or off before its put in DFU Mode.
